- Why two simultaneous sections and not one continuous relay?
This new race format is required to address environmental issues and safety concerns. This allows the relay to be completed in daylight, increasing the visibility of runners and wildlife, and everyone gets to the party on time!! Back to top
- Is this a non-profit organization and what happens to the profits if there is any?
We are incorporated as a non-profit society under Alberta law. We achieve a small surplus every year, allowing us to sustain the race in subsequent years. Our objectives is to keep the registration fee at an amount that is comparable with other similar relay events and provide great value to the participants. Donations to the Brain Tumor Foundation of Canada are made via an online donation system that we link to from this site, and these funds are not mixed with relay operating expenses. Back to top
- Are teams required to register 15 runners? Can a runner run multiple stages or can a stage be split ?
Teams must register 15 runners and each runner must run one stage. Runners are not allowed to run multiple stages without penalty. No stage can be split. However a runner can be substituted out during a stage (see substitution rules found in the Captain's manual) Back to top
- What if one of our registered 15 runners cannot participate at the last minute due to injury, illness or other misfortune?
This is not uncommon and we strongly suggest that teams recruit and register spare runners (1 to 3 people) so that they will have a last minute replacement available for such situation. We will also try our best to match individual runners with an existing team looking for runners. Back to top
- Are there cut-off times for individual stages or for the two sections of the race?
The new format for the race allows additional time for teams to complete the two
phases of the race before the respective cut-off times. The cut-off times for specific
stages and average pace required for completion of each phase will be posted on the web
site and teams that are running significantly slower than that pace may be required to
participate in a forced start before their runner from the prior stage arrives in order to get
back on the required time schedule. In extreme situations a team that is running too slow
may be required to withdraw. This is only fair to our course marshals and exchange point
volunteers and allows us to schedule for shifting volunteers up the course as the race
progresses. Teams need to train and plan to complete the race within the required time
and be prepared to substitute a runner as necessary to maintain the required pace. Back to top
- Why is there no runner support allowed on South Phase Stage 1 and 2 along Highway 1A?
Even with small number of teams and the partial restrictions on that section of the
course for the 2005 Relay, there were still environmental and safety concerns from Parks
Canada. In order to hopefully put an end to those ongoing issues, we felt we had no
choice but to take this additional step to allow the race to grow and be sustainable. (See Captain's Manual Pg. 39) Back to top
